Fulford Heath Golf Club has a thriving ladies section that is the envy of many clubs in the area.
Ladies Captain 2018 – Gillian Hazlewood OBE
“I joined Fulford Heath Golf Club almost nine years ago as a golf beginner and I love playing the game. At that time I never dreamt that I would become Ladies Captain which is a great honour and privilege.
After a few lessons with the Professional I was let loose on the golf course and began playing initially with my husband but then later with the ladies. I found everyone very friendly, supportive and encouraging and I was quickly accepted within the ladies section and within the Club. We have a very vibrant ladies section and lady golfers of all abilities are made very welcome. There are numerous opportunities for our ladies to play in club competitions, as well as league, friendly and mixed matches against other local Golf Clubs both at home and away.”
During her year as Ladies Captain Gill raises money for charity and her choice of charity is Midlands Air Ambulance. It will come as a surprise to learn that Air Ambulances are not financed by the government nor by the Lottery and are totally dependent upon donations. In order to operate Midlands Air Ambulance it needs to raise over £9 million each year and hence this is a very worthwhile charity. Anyone of us, our family and friends may have reason to call upon this lifesaving service. A sobering fact for golfers is that 5% of turnouts by Air Ambulances are to golf courses!
Gill has found that being a member of Fulford Heath Golf Club gives her an opportunity, not only to keep active, but to meet people from all walks of life and can certainly expand an individual’s social circle of friends. As well as golf competitions, Fulford Heath holds a number of social events throughout the year and there is a large number of non-golfing social members.
Gill is ably supported by Vice Captain Enid Robbins and a hardworking committee:-
– President – Maggie Gower
– Secretary – Carole Fennell
– Treasurer – Maria Bagust
– Competitions – Wendy Hocken
– County Rep – Karen Sharman
– Marketing – Georgina Foxwell
– Immediate Past Captain – Elizabeth Timms
If you enjoy playing in matches against other clubs then again the ladies section has something for everyone regardless of handicap. If you are interested in playing in any of the matches look out for notices on the noticeboard or via Facebook or speak to the organiser of each team.
The scratch team is captained by Louise Parker. Those on lower handicaps tend to play for the Scratch Team which takes part in a league that includes 37 clubs in 7 divisions from Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. The format is singles matchplay.
Droitwich Inter Club League
The Droitwich League is also run by Louise Parker. The Droitwich Inter Club League includes 24 Midlands clubs in 4 divisions all competing to win their division and to go on and compete in the semi finals and hopefully finals at the end of the season. Teams are made up of 5 players who go out in handicap order in singles matches.
We also have a full range of friendly matches against other clubs in the local area. These matches offer those on higher handicaps the opportunity to play in competitive matches but in a sociable environment. The format is greensomes. The match is always followed by a nice lunch afterwards! The friendly matches are organised by Elizabeth Timms
The Ladies Captain organises the Club’s Mixed matches which are played through the season. These are friendly matches played, mostly, on a Sunday afternoon between Fulford and other Clubs across the Midlands or sometimes further afield. They are a great afternoon out playing some good golf with some really good people. Every match is spent in good company and there is a meal to round off the day.
It does not matter if you do not have a partner just put your name on the list to say you are interested in playing in the games and if they can pair you up they will. To know if you are playing keep an eye on the second board on the right as you go into the hall leading to the changing rooms.
